In the final months of 2016, one of Shakespeare’s most violent, politically-charged, and lesser-known plays feels shockingly familiar. Coriolanus is tragedy set in Rome post-apocalypse, in a time of great unrest. The military is stretched thin abroad while the people’s outraged voices are manipulated by self-serving elected officials. Caius Martius Coriolanus returns from war as the pride of the Roman military, and when his beloved mother encourages him to run for public office he consents. His disgust for the lower class makes quick work of their trust in him, and tensions between ruler and ruled explode into chaos, leaving Rome ripe for the taking.
