Today, CopyWrite and the hip-hop world mourns the lost of a true icon.
Phife Dawg (born Malik Taylor) was a founding member of A Tribe Called Quest and died Tuesday at the age of 45 from complications resulting from diabetes. While multiple media outlets confirmed the rapper's death, Phife had health issues for years, undergoing a kidney transplant in 2008 to deal with a longtime battle with diabetes.
While in ATCQ, Phife appeared on all five of the group's studio albums, most notably 1991's The Low End Theory and 1993's Midnight Marauders, acting as the high-pitched, gruff vocal counterpoint to Q-Tip's smooth, mellow flow.

A few weeks ago I was randomly at an event with my guy (somewhere I had no business being might I add, but yet and still I was there). This dude was passing out burnt CD’s, with Sharpie writing on them, but in a CD slip with the tracklist and cover art (idk how I felt about that, but I guess that's not the point). He handed one to both of us and said “Look bro, if you don't like what you hear by the first three songs throw it out the window.” That to me raised a red flag plus the harshly design cover art (#designerissues), I was definitely not going to waste my time. He of course had no idea who I was or what I do, I doubt anyone in that room did, hence a place i had no “business” being, but you never know where CopyWrite might show up. I took the CD and planned to dispose of it later but never did. It sat in the pocket of my passenger side door, till the other day I was driving back from Chicago and it just kept haunting my peripheral view. I reach for it and thought “Let me listen to it before I chuck it out the window.”
And guess what... it wasn't bad. For what it was, there was something there. I'm not sure what that something is, but I continued to listen pass the the 3rd song and let it play for a 2nd time. And within that evening I played it another 2 times trying to analyze what I was hearing. Enough that I think it's important to acknowledge. He took a risk handing out those CD’s. And I took a risk to listen. Maybe if we all take a few more risk we may find some pathways we have not yet explored. We told you he would be back but we couldn't anticipate something this dope. With electronic music that just makes you want to vibe out and get to work; Moses, from Higher Education Records (HER) finally reveals his debut album, 'Not Quite Vegas.'
All mixed and mastered by himself, the local Milwaukee DJ and producer brings together a story of the past five years of his life as he composes his way through love, lost, success and failure. But in every song you can hear the passion as he releases a new emotion and (for lack of better words) a dope beat throughout the whole album.

Clearly he has no time to waste on a bad track. In Mic Kellogg's newest track 'Tennies,' the emcee/producer showcases off his skills on an upbeat tempo that basically tells his audience he has zero fu*ks given and he will go his own path.

It reminds me of the days when Pops used to come scoop me in the white Lincoln. Driving down Capital with the music up high but the beats were so smooth in the those days, it never seemed to disturb a soul. At stop lights cars would pull up and the driver would just nod their heads, like “I see you”...yeah reminds me of the good times, that were just the in between times, the ones we forget to notice. The intermissions.
Intermission Music by Vato, brought back that random nostalgia. The nine track project, with its recognizable lyric samples, lucid beats and raw layered production, is perfect for those moments where you just need a little escape within the confines of reality.
The first track “Boxed (BTS)” leads you into the concept of opening up. As the list of songs play through, you can hear a trend of mental stimulation, elevation and observation. “Stress Free Zone” gives the listener a reminder to be a little more joyous in the struggle. Followed by “D.O.O.B.I.E.S.” & “Marry, Marry, Marry”, smoke themed tracks, that are catchy and perfect for a chiefing session. Vato's manish behavior, comes out in a “young” sultry rendition of R.Kelly’s “Your Body’s Callin”, titled “Callin”.
Intermission Music is the kind of project whose references you won’t understand unless you been vibing with the game since young blood, but still it may help some new age music lovers divulge some “thrifty” techniques, something that makes Vato fit into his own niche on the local scene.
We see a growth in Vato’s confidence and look forward to hearing Intermission Music, between all those major moments that need a dose of good vibes.

As a producer, the head of Higher Education Records (HER) and probably your favorite DJ, Moses is forever impressing us with his grind. We see it in everything he works at and this is no different in his newest music video "RUN", directed by Matt Bordman and Brian Jude of WhyBoxWhy.
With surreal and trippy visuals, the video matches the energetic vibe of the track and while the music from his upcoming album may not be quite Vegas; we can't help but anticipate dopeness.
Moses' grind doesn't just stop with his work ethic but also with his big heart; as he dedicates the video to Pat Yo, a friend that was lost too soon. And as we all live in this crazy world, we understand the chaos and #WeSeeYou Moses.

Fresh (pardon the pun) from Scottie Phreshh & Skyy Phreshh of First Class, a Milwaukee-based music group is the official video for Anarachy.
Anarchy is another track from their upcoming debut album "Peace To The Gods", scheduled to be released this next month. Shot by JSwaqq Productions, the video brings together a view of the city taking the energy of the track to another level visual with some trippy effects.
