Young Deuces - The Lie (video submission)

Young Deuces really made a tear-jerker that tugs at your heartstrings when he made his song “The Lie.” The video starts off with a Father taking his daughter to school, telling her how great her day will be and how after school they are going to get crab legs (I thought that was a nice added touch because I felt that, crab legs are bomb lol). While his daughter is at school, the Dad is running around Milwaukee when suddenly he gets pulled over for a traffic stop, something a lot of us fear now, since we have no idea how a simple stop could play out. Unfortunately in the video, the Father’s stop didn’t end well. After school, the daughter waits for him to pick her up, but eventually goes to look for him, only to find him in his car surrounded by yellow tape.

I appreciate videos like this that highlight the issues going on in our communities rather than always talking about the same ol’ “getting money and hoes” narrative that usually gets highlighted more. Visuals like this have a lot more power and holds more weight. I thought it was a dope creative expression. Good job, Young Deuces.

Take a look at the video and tell us what you think!

$killz - 4Eva Heartless Challenge (video submission)

When we say $killz literally went off, we mean it because he obviously wants all the smoke in his lyric video challenge, ‘4 Eva Heartless’, directed by TRDMRK! It’s a video that matches the rapid fire pace of $killz’s original flow. The video starts with a masked $killz that we later begin to know as a wordsmith. The screen is filled with a slow hail fire of words, to a blazing rapid fire flow with similes and metaphors that if your ears are too slow to listen, then maybe your eye might catch some of it. The clarity of the video was great too, it gave us a nice crisp feel. This is one challenge you don’t wanna miss, check it out!

S/O to "OUR" representation at Milwaukee City Hall (Colin Kaepernick to be featured in city’s 28 Days of Black History)

uAnM86ui_400x400.jpg

This morning Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, Alderman Cavalier Johnson and Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd of Milwaukee, released a statement standing behind Colin Kaepernick to be featured in city’s 28 Days of Black History!

The statement follows:

It is unfortunate that certain state legislators in Madison have worked in opposition to theirAfrican American colleagues to block Wisconsin native Colin Kaepernick from being included in a state Black History Month resolution. But here in Milwaukee we welcome the addition of Mr. Kaepernick to our city’s 28 Days of Black History project and look forward to his profile being featured on our city’s main page and on the City Channel. As we note in the project – an effort to celebrate Black History Month by featuring those who have left their mark on Milwaukee’s Black history – Black history is still being written and is ever developing.

We understand that Mr. Kaepernick is a controversial figure, but black history makers tend to be controversial by nature. Few, if any, were accepted by the broader society when they were doing their work, but in hindsight, our nation recognizes that their counter-cultural actions were crucial to the growth of our country. Mr. Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee and his willingness to stand up for what he believes and against the violent and oppressive (and sometimes deadly) treatment of Black and Brown citizens by law enforcement has brought attention to some of the most important issues of our time. Quite simply, by doing so he has made history.

Additionally, he has donated generously to help many worthwhile causes across the U.S., including two Milwaukee groups, the I Will Not Die Young Campaign and UrbanUnderground.

Unlike some in Madison we are truly honored to feature Colin Kaepernick as part of ourBlack History celebration.

Joint_statement_-_Colin_Kaepernick_to_be_featured_in_city_Black_History_project2.jpg

Look lets make this clear we are SOCIAL, not POLITICAL. But if there is ever a time to remember the historical implications of our political representation not standing up with “our” people, it is now.

Collin is controversial in the same way MLK, Gandhi, Rosa, Baldwin and so many others have been. History is then. History is now. History is tomorrow.

STOP BLOCKING OUR HEROES TO SOOTH YOUR CRIMINALS.

Ave4 - iknwitsalittlelate

“Brooding, Moody, Different is what ave4 sounds like, but he knows no bounds.

A practicing DJ-turned-Producer, ave loves to blend and flip abstract and nostalgic samples to create moods and music that automatically catches the ear.

With influences like Atu, Dpat, Sango, Knxwledge amongst others in the LA beat scene, Ave4 strives to bring that sound to Milwaukee as well as create sounds that last generations to come.

While maintaining a bit of mystery and obscurity in his social media, he aims to make his name count and develop a vibe and feel that isn’t always heard on soundscapes.”

Despite only having a handful of songs out now, His upcoming debut project ‘SUNSET’ is set to drop this year, as his first foray into things officially but will have a lot more dropping this year on SoundCloud as well as Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal.

Give him a listen and tell us if he should get the #CopyWrite stamp of approval.

Carrie’s Curl Conversation: Natural Hair in Milwaukee

Have you read Issue 13 Rebellion?

Feature article Carrie’s Curl Conversation came from a sit down with women talking about natural hair.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Hair is the subject of an ongoing conversation in the black community. Whether you wear it straight, in a low cut, throw a wig on it or put a relaxer in it, hair is something black women love and can talk about all day long. But something that gets less attention is the hair that black women are born with—their natural hair. Natural hair has been a hush-hush topic since, well, forever. But now, more women are going natural and more women are talking about it.

Black Women and hairstylists discuss the controversial topic of natural hair. Although the natural hair movement is progressing, in Milwaukee and other non-metropolitan cities, the knowledge of natural hair is still scarce. Carrie Mahone, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee journalist, has the much-needed curl conversation to find out why.

Joe Quinto - Out Of My Mind

Have you ever been in a relationship and wonder if it’s worth it? Maybe you feel like the relationship is becoming toxic for the both of you and you don’t see the benefit of being together anymore? Is that person starting to make you think, “well, maybe I’m trippin…?”. If you said yes, then you can relate to Joe Quinto’s song “Out Of My Mind” produced by Sean Sison. In this song, Joe is reflecting on his current relationship and is letting his girl know what he’s been thinking about their relationship lately and he’s realizing he has to go!

“‘Out Of My Mind’ has a laid-back vibe with a slightly aggressive undertone,” Joe said about his project, and we couldn’t agree more. You can really feel that hurt.

Shout out to Joe for the submission!

Yogie B & Keez - The Wake Up (Video Submission)

Today’s submission is a video from the hip-hop duo Yogie B & Keez titled “The Wake Up.” Right now everybody is doing the #10YearChallenge on social media and this video definitely feels like a throwback. I get Lupe Fiasco “Kick, Push” vibes from the way everyone in the video is at the skatepark on skateboards or bikes and the beat of the song is super chill. The lyrics match up really well with the concept of the video too, with the idea of doing things on your own time and not caring about what everyone else has to say...that’s the mood going forward in 2019, okay?! #CarefreeLivin

Be who you want. Keep it real. This is the wake up - Yogie B & Keez

Take a listen for yourself and tell us in the comments what you thought of the video.

Dirty Thought's - "Contamination"

“I mean I’m in my chest. It’s Killer Season. My focus is to annihilate this semester.” - an excerpt from a conversation I had with Big BaeBee last week.

As I hit the ground running making sure not to slip up with my responsibilities outside of my role at CopyWrite, it has become a symbolic time. The same way the chill rushed through the air and Hell as we know it froze overnight, spite with a blizzard of judgement came rushing into my world killing all the warm memories that had kept me silent for the past year (with only subliminal messages projected to those who needed to know).

The first reading of the semester would find a way to deliver me a message that would calm my nerves, put that ego back in my chest, remove the gloves in a way that coerces my friends turned foes to keep watching and allow me to laugh at the “loss” I just took.

(Real question is are you reading this? Lol)

Scholar, Kwame Anthony Appiahjan’s article “The Case for Contamination” (2006), delivered some insightful takes on globalizing factors of homogeneity that question limits of tolerance and concepts of Universal Truths. This banter of right and wrong projected by the westernized society onto other existences, customs, beliefs, life styles, practices, (you name it), has been indoctrinated into even your average citizen and boy oh boy how they forget that it was the colonizing, genocide creating, aristocratic, white male who started those “moral” trends.

But it is this quote that Appiahjan’s concluded his theory with that resonated with me:

“When we make judgments, after all, it's rarely because we have applied well-thought-out principles to a set of facts and deduced an answer. Our efforts to justify what we have done -- or what we plan to do -- are typically made up after the event, rationalizations of what we have decided intuitively to do. And a good deal of what we intuitively take to be right, we take to be right just because it is what we are used to. That does not mean, however, that we cannot become accustomed to doing things differently.”

I fuckin’ snickered with my nerdy self in understanding that my recent plight had been a cast of judgement of others not understanding their own moral compass, choosing to point to structured “rights”, accept the “wrongs” that they preferred, and rationalize after making a “Fuck you! I can't deal with your truth.” it hurts my soul, decision. Bloop, that's called hypocrisy, sweetie.

I say all that to say this. . . The next day I walked to the class I was about to teach, because yup, I do that too,  listening to Bone Thugs n Harmony - Thuggish Ruggish Bone, because I’m Dirty Bone (Lol) and I’m living my truth. I’m about that life, and until those around me can say the same for themselves they will continue to drop into the homogeneous bucket of complacency. Trying to live to societal standards instead of fulfilling your purpose.

But if I have to make the reference more current  *cues Chance The Rapper’s “I Might Need Security” & let me give my Soulja Boy on Breakfast Club speech. “I started this shit. Y’all shitted on me bro and laughed at me like I was nothing. I’m coming back with vengeance…DRAKEEEEEEEEE?????????” Soft natural stunt.
