Carrie’s Countdown

What’s up CopyWrite fam! It’s ya girl Carrie (AKA Noni Juice) and I present to you my brand new show: Carrie’s Countdown. Now y’all know I’m always down to create opportunities for people to showcase their work, especially in a fun way. Growing up, 106&Park had always been a show I looked forward to watching to see all the hottest new videos and Milwaukee has a lot of dope videos too. But it’s time to see who really dominates the city. If you think you deserve that title of King or Queen of the Mil, here’s how it works:

  1. Submit your music videos to copywrite.connect@gmail.com.

  2. Make the subject “Carrie’s Countdown Video Submission” and in the message attach the video’s MP4 file, your artist name, title of the video, director/videographer and any other facts you would want the audience to know about you, the song, your music, etc.

  3. A follow up email will be sent with the link for your fans to vote you in.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS MAY 24, 2020

That’s it. It’s that simple! Here are the guidelines:

Rules:

  • Once a month you’ll submit your video (2 videos MAX per submission)

  • Carrie’s Countdown will drop every 1st and 3rd sunday of the month

  • If you win the #1 spot for both episodes, you officially get the title of King/Queen of the Mil until another artist takes the crown and wins twice in a row

  • For the next round of submissions, if your video already made the countdown, you can’t submit that same video

  • If you didn’t make the countdown, you can re-submit that same video for the chance to  make it next month

lik - rhythm and poetry for the ghetto children

image.jpg

The artist highlight of the week goes to Lik and his mixtape “rhythm and poetry for the ghetto children.” This guy is super dope and a local creative and we’re so excited for you all to discover some new music from him. He gave us a peek into his mind when he released his mixtape, May 1st! Here’s a little about the project from Lik himself:

“THIS PROJECT IS NOT A GUIDELINE TO A WAY OF BEING, BUT ME ACCESSING MY TRUE POWER INTERNALLY AND LEARNING THE MEANING OF “SELF LOVE” THROUGH SELF REFLECTION AND SELF EXPLORATION. TIME AND TIME AGAIN CHILDREN OF THE DIASPORA ARE TOLD NOT TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES, THAT THEIR UNIQUE OUTLOOK SIMPLY DOESN’T MATTER. FEAR BASED TACTICS ARE CONSTANTLY IMPLEMENTED AND IT DRAGS US FURTHER AND FURTHER AWAY FROM OUR TRUE NATURE AND THE CREATOR. RHYTHM AND POETRY IS SIMPLY ME USING THE ARTFORM OF MUSIC TO HARMONIZE WITH THE CREATOR, TO CHANNEL MY INNER CHILD AND INSPIRE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. IM AWARE THAT THIS PROCESS DOESN’T STOP, THAT KNOWLEDGE IS INFINITE AND EVOLUTION IS A CONSTANT PROCESS. SO IM JUST DOCUMENTING THE PROGRESS I’VE MADE ON MY JOURNEY THUS FAR AND I’LL CONTINUE TO SHARE AND CHANNEL THESE MESSAGES FROM THE CREATOR UNTIL I LEAVE THIS EARTH. LOVE!”

I promise he’s not yelling, just super excited for you to hear what he’s up to. I want you guys to go listen for yourself and let us know what you think. It is a project including production from Knowsthetime, KLEFTO, Chuck Strangers, Wayne J Valentine, Bugginout, and K Le Maestro, Haz Solo, and Malik Abduul Rahmaan.

If you’re looking for a new sound, this is your guy!

SHUNMILLION$ - What I Made Today Vol 2

nhc.jpg

After two years of anticipation, Shun Millions is back and so much better. Let’s jump right in.

Badu is a very smooth flowing track. The double vocal track definitely reminds me of Kendrick Lamar. I haven’t quite heard this type of flow from a Milwaukee artist.

Indie shows us Shun appreciation for a certain woman or a few that fit the same description. This is his ode to independent women. There’s an interesting transition much later in the song that really ties the song together.

What Else you want from me? On this track, he’s speaking directly to one girl. He’s given her everything that he has yet it still seems to be not enough.

Bad has a very captivating beat, it’s super catchy! Shun’s having a bad day, y’all. He woke up to no blunt and no chick. That’s tough. Felt. This song is definitely my favorite so far. *Adds to library*

Six sense: Shun showing us what type of time he on. He onnat! This is a track where he is definitely just talking his shit. Again, flow and production is amazing here. It doesn’t sound rushed at all--which it shouldn’t considering it’s been two years.

Cocaina: Again, doing what he does best… talking his shit. This sounds more like a freestyle compared to the other songs.

She Coming Up: Aw, yeah. If you’re a female, you’re going to jam to this song. It’s a song  dedicated to the girls coming up. He’s basically saying, “You got this and you are going to get everything you desire in due time.” Aye…’preciate it boss

Overall, I really like this EP. There’s no bias here because it genuinely is a solid body of work. SHUN MILLIONS. Remember the name, the face, and the sound, ALL OF IT. He’s going places and you’d hate to be sleep on someone like this.

Stream this EP, y’all know what to do. I’m not finna play with y’all. My boy!

Now streaming on all platforms!

Liza Jane - VITAMINS

COVID-19 has ruined everything but creativity. One thing that remains untouched is the music. Music is so important, it drives everything like your mood, your sanity and your life--well, at least for me. If you’re not taking advantage of this time to expand your musical taste then “ion think you quarantinin’’ right.” I’ll tell you guys a short story… just because I’m a nice person. So there was this person right? They wanted to be a supportive *hint hint*. They didn’t want to be a bum anymore. They really wanted to listen to new music but didn’t know where to start. They had no idea that I was about to plug them with this best idea they had all week: stream Liza Jane.

Be that person--here’s your sign (LOL)

Liza Jane is back with another great song that is just perfect for the climate of this quarantine. Some people are wasting their time and some people are making the most of it. Some people are even finding themselves and facing themselves head on. That’s what “VITAMINS” is all about. Word on the street is:

“Her bright yet haunting vocal performance pairs unexpectedly with up tempo trap-like instrumentals from producer ThatguyEli. With this unlikely combination of genre, Vitamins fosters the success of her performance and sound from her previous project with a newfound delivery that will have you wanting to press replay once the song is through."

Did it sell you? ‘Cause it sold me!

“Trying to be a little more sure of myself” is the very first line of the song. This is off top telling  us that this one is going to be personal. The chorus takes us on a trip of Jane reflecting on herself. “Working on myself all the time, trying to play it cool like things are fine” is really sending me because girl, I get it. I think people often forget that people are always fighting battles against themselves. While no, it’s no one’s business, it’s important to know that while people are figuring themselves out, it is extremely difficult to hide that journey from others (referring to “trying to play it cool like things are fine). The chorus goes on to talk about more of a clarity moment where she is trying to figure herself out. She doesn’t seem to know what she’s missing in her life. She comes face to face with herself. She’s beginning to piece together fragments of her life and noticing that she still has a lot to figure out.

I think this is a really pretty song especially if you can relate to it. I think the song is very vulnerable in a way that’s empowering. #girlpower! She’s basically like yeah, I don’t have it all figured out but that doesn’t mean i’m not working on it. Me too, Liza. Me too. I think it’s extremely liberating to even have a real conversation with yourself. Recognizing the beauty of not knowing what’s ahead but knowing that you're worth more than what you've been through is a helluva moment. “Being played like a chess piece” is not something to be proud of but it happens to the best of us. Learning from life and applying it to yourself is key in the “self discovery journey”. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes but what matters is the way you bounce back. And in this case, take your vitamins. (get it?)

Ladies, if you’re in your feels, do yourself a favor and cope--with this song. Thank you Liza Jane for yet another super cool song! Check her out! #Supportthelocal! And it’s the song’s first day out so be nice, be kind and be obedient. Do what it is that I ask of you :)

Genesis Renji - Back Back

IMG-1108.JPG

Genesis Renji is no stranger to the music industry nor the Milwaukee music scene. “Genesis Renji is an Emmy nominated hip-hop artist based out of Milwaukee, WI. Born in Bethesda, MD, Renji started rapping at 12 years old after his cousin Pierre introduced him to rap music.” He’s more than just music but today, we’ll just focus on that.

“In the middle of a pandemic and being quarantined indoors, a lot has changed for the world, but not so much for Genesis Renji. Being the studio rat he is already, this seems like another day for Gen and he shows it within his new stream of releases.”

What to add to your playlist this week: Back Back by Genesis Renji

—and it’s CW Approved!

“Every Monday, Gen is set to release new music (the first release was “Suffocate” produced by 46Brock). This new offering comes in collaboration with Milwaukee producer Jxst Jxne. Back Back is the deja’vu experience in love. An infectious ode to the attraction of another person.”

This track is very subtle and catchy. It doesn’t have a lot of energy meaning it’s a very smooth and chill song. It’s super catchy for one and definitely makes me feel like I need to listen to this if I’m trying to get lit but in the chillest way possible. It honestly is a short and sweet song so you definitely have time to check it out.

With that being said, you know what comes next. This is the part where you do your job… and what could that possibly be? Let me help you out---stream the damn song, duh!

Also, check him out on the socials too!

Throw Back Tuesday! #H.E.L.P. (Happy Election Lit Playlist)

About four years ago we dropped this playlist to set the vibe for election day. Even though today we should be voting for the primaries, we thought it would be fitting to bring this one back into rotation. So take it for a spin as you get your social distancing on.

We are not political. We are social. Drop a comment and let us know your still good CW fam!

It's about that time to decide who will run The United States of America for the next four years. We hate to see our President go, this playlist was designed by Copywrite Magazine to help you overcome those voting season blues.

Young Deuces - Fly Me ft. Serita Campbell (Video Submission)

image (9).png

‘Fly Me’ is a cry for clarity. Young Deuces calls about society in every line of the song. He talks about racism, colorism, stereotypes, lack of resources and so much more. It’s a very heavy loaded song. It's a song with a message we all know but most don’t want to admit--especially in a city like Milwaukee where racism thrives and lives freely.

Here’s some more insight, “With his continued fight to use his words as a message, Young Deuces Releases his first official music video from his latest album, Son of  Soldier.  One of the stand out tracks from the album, Fly Me, featuring the amazing soulful songstress Serita Campbell gets the Famous Motion Film Treatment for the video.  The visuals are a powerful reflection of where we came from and where we are headed and depending on how you view it, you may just want to Fly Away from it all.”

When I listen to music, I tend to compare underground artists to mainstream artists to give some type of lead way into what you’d be remotely listening to but in this case, I can’t. Young Deuces is very unique in that way. I can say, he sounds slightly similar to J. Cole’s flow on the Friday Night Lights mixtape but that’s about it.

Check him out, listen to him yourself and let us know what you think. WATCH THE VIDEO, it’s that easy.  Y’all in quarantine anyways, y’all ain’t doing much. Stop playing in people's faces and listen to some new music!
