Mackenzie Adams: Protect The Future

The war didn’t seem like a war for us; because of my parent’s company we didn’t lose our money, homes or resources. We donated a lot of food, water and opened a few shelters for people in the California area for people that lost everything during the war. I miss that about me and my family.

Growing up during the war was bittersweet, I was homeschooled so I didn’t have a chance to make friends but I developed a great bond with my family and teachers. We always had lots of pictures and shared tons of memorable moments together, but for some odd reason now they have only a few remaining pictures hanging up. My Dad is distant now; almost like he's hiding something. If he's not at the headquarters of the company then he's in the home office all day. With this being my freshman year at GID Academy, I just want us to be the family we used to be because I need their support.

Mom continues to do everything she can to keep me from worrying but I overheard her and Dad a couple of days ago and it didn’t sound good. They talking about three new factories that need to be up and running immediately, Dad seemed stressed and Mom was trying to keep him calm but I heard him say, “We can’t mess this up or they’re going to come after us.” I just want to know what’s going on with my family.

Represent

Where we come from, where we are going, and where we dwell are not one in the same. Our story, our history and our legacy run simultaneously. Current events, the nature of media, and the social platforms that connect us have sparked thought in our communities and consciousness in our conversations. Our Chicago connect, Jay Freelance, has created a series of images that where inspired by Kendrik Lamar’s performance at the Grammy’s. Where “Compton” became the namesake of the continent of Africa, she gives us our own marking, putting “our” cities name on the map as well. We hope that this image becomes a conversation piece and we find liberation in its controversy.

Happy Black History Month.

Kabari Brown: Along Came The Victory

I've heard many stories about the 2015 uprising that led to war in 2016 that changed everything. I was still a kid when everything started to happen so I don't remember as much, but my parents were fearless. Anytime we were faced with a difficult situation they always had confidence that we would find a way.

We evacuated Milwaukee and headed to Chicago not too long after my little brother Isaiah was born. From Chicago we were briefly in Cleveland right before the war ended. After the war was over things had seemed to return to normal. After the announcement about the war being over, everyone across the states migrated to California for treatment and to hear about King Light’s next plan to redevelop everything that was lost during the war. Everything was great, until Moms started receiving treatment from GWA Biotech, it was weird. Before we got to California she was just fine, maybe some bruises or war wounds but nothing too serious. She went in for a couple of the post-war treatments but not too long after she got really ill and passed. It was so shocking and heart-wrenching for our family but I didn't have time to grieve because of my responsibility to help my father take care of home and to make matters even worse my little brother has been missing since the funeral.

Going into my senior year at GID Academy is important and I'm trying to fight off the pressure of being a leader on and off the court but it seems like every day I find myself wishing Moms was her; pops is starting to get really worried about Isaiah.

Isaiah Brown: The Shadow of Freedom

Everyone talks about the importance of the war; I'm more focused on the future. I was born close to the ending of the war but from what I know growing up is that history repeats itself and I'm not about to let another war happen again. King Light led us to these peaceful times but when he passed away everyone knew who was next in line to take his place, King Seale.

Being the world's leader is a powerful responsibility and I need Intel on him and his plan to maintain peace. I've heard stories about how he was King Light's understudy so I'm sure he has good intentions but good intentions don’t always get the job done because there’s something weird about GWA Biotech, when moms started getting treatment from them she didn't get better, she got worse. It's been weeks since her funeral and I haven't been home or school. I’m going to do some sneaking around to find what they did to my mom and why they're building all these factories around the city.

“The World Will Remember Us” Comic Book - THE PRELUDE

Mission10Eleven has a lot to say about the world and they’re reading to tell their story.

With plot twists, some very humbling lessons and role models we always wish we had, “The World Will Remember Us” comic book was created to speak on the issues our community faces and bring a conscious awareness to aspects of life we have been through.

Check out the Prelude below and on February 26th, let’s take this journey together so the world will remember us.

The Prelude

In 2016, the people became fed up with the government and a war began between the democracy and the people. The people were led by a great man that everyone referred to as King Light, this king put everything he had into bringing the world to peace but in the beginning the war was in favor of the government. That was until Africa and China signed a treaty that would tip the balance in the people’s favor to win the war. After the war was over in 2026, what everyone had known as the United States was destroyed. However there were a few cities that didn’t become complete warzones, one of those places was California.

In 2028, the people were notified that it was time to begin redevelopment and they can begin traveling to California. Sadly during the time everyone is traveling to the new civilization, King Light passes away from old age and his understudy King Seale was appointed the new king of the world. King Light warned King Seale about a prophecy that could start another war in 2035.

Darkness is still lurking, a remaining few of individuals from the government didn’t take losing the war too well and formed a council to plan their next attack on King Seale and anyone that’s assisting him in bringing peace. The year of 2035 has come, the year of the prophecy and now it is up to a new king to bring together 4 teenagers and stop the plan that the evil council has prepared.

Can't Knock The Hustle // What Up From Our Editor

If Complex called you up & scheduled an interview with you, what would you do? Would you set the date, wait 15 minutes before your meet up & cancel? Would you reschedule for the next day & then not show up for that meeting too? Or maybe would you just avoid their offer...until you realize, Complex is actually pretty dope, free publicity is crucial and there support system is massive?

No! You would break your ass for that moment! You would thank your lucky stars, butt kiss and all...just saying.

So why is it that when CopyWrite calls you up, works with your schedule and makes reservations to interview you, you act Hollywood? You forget you calendar meetings and act like we have nothing better to do then wait on you.

Excuse me??? This ain't that. I repeat this ain't that.

This misuse of each other & unprofessional conduct must stop. If you’re still dwelling around these parts, you’re apart of the issue, if you’re not addressing the problem.

And no shade at all, I know there are a few locals who probably think this is all about them (Guilty Conscious) but sorry loves there are multiples of you that need a reality check.

Listen up MKE, we are here striving to be communal, to open up doors for those bold enough to walk through them, to hold a platform made for the people, by people who are really invested in OUR Urban Culture.

So don't act like we are not worthy. The war is against the norm. The war is against the naysayers. The Revolution is MKE. Choose up. Or be left behind. We don't need you. We need US.

I just had to get that off my chest.
